Burgess Paluch has built an enviable reputation for recruiting high calibre construction lawyers into Australia’s leading firms. Construction activity has significantly ramped up in Australia in recent years, with the December quarter of 2015 witnessing more cranes on the Sydney skyline than any other city in the world outside of Dubai. This phenomenal increase has meant that demand among top-tier law firms for talented construction lawyers has seen a huge spike. While the Sydney market has seen the greatest demand, other state capitals have also seen an increase in the number of construction lawyer vacancies available, most notably in Melbourne and Brisbane. The demand from the top and mid-tier law firms is typically for lawyers with a minimum of 2 years PAE through to Senior Associate level. However, we have also recruited in this space exceptionally talented junior lawyers who have trained at the top-tier. And at the Partner level there has also been substantial lateral movement amongst both the mid and top-tier firms.
What to expect
Construction teams within the Australian law firms typically undertake a diverse range of projects including office and industrial, hospitality, commercial and residential, engineering and other procurement, and large infrastructure projects. The majority of lawyers at the top-tier firms will specialise either in front-end transactional construction work or in back-end litigation and alternative dispute resolution. In the boutique and mid-tier firms, however, lawyers will often practice in both front-end and back-end construction law. We have assisted quality construction lawyers wishing to experience larger, more complex and more lucrative projects, to move from mid-tier to fill positions at top-tier firms. We also assist junior to mid-level commercial litigation lawyers who have acquired some construction disputes experience in mid-tier firms to segue into top-tier firms where they can specialise in this highly specialised and rewarding area of law.
Where we hire
Burgess Paluch have experience recruiting front-end construction lawyers for jobs offshore. Particularly in the London and Asian markets, there is a strong demand for lawyers with quality experience at top-tier Australian law firms. While the demand for back-end construction lawyers offshore is somewhat lower, we have had success placing lawyers with stellar experience at the 3-5 PAE level, coming from the global top-tier.
